I am a kinky coily natural living in a dry, humid (Houston, TX) climate. I have a dry itchy scalp. I don’t have problems with dandruff or any other dermatitis issues just a dry itchy scalp. Since it’s so hot and humid I currently wear protective styles like twist. Do you have any recommendations on how to maintain natural hair in a dry humid climate during these record setting temperatures?
First I suggest to deep condition weekly to help retain as much moisture as possible. When deep conditioning make sure your hair is fully saturated with the treatment. Next, cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer if you have one. The heat will allow the pores and cuticles to open so the hair can receive as much maximum moisture. The recommended time to deep condition is 15 to 30 minutes but with hot dry climates like Texas I always deep condition for 30 minutes. Rinse the hair with cold or cool water to close the cuticles to ensure that each strand traps in the moisture . Follow-up with a water based leave-in conditioner and proceed to styling.
For daily moisture and itchy scalp I suggest using a hydration spray. Here are a few of my favorite hydration sprays.
Obia Naturals Hydration Curl Spray is a water based moisturizer made with Argan Oil and Rose Oil that helps to hydrate the hair and scalp. I like this product because of the Argan Oil and Rose Oil. Argan Oil acts as a moisturizer that helps with dry itchy scalp. Rose Oil helps to keep the hair moisturized and prevent hydration and has anti-inflammatory properties to help calm a range of scalp conditions.
Design Essentials Coconut and Monoi Coconut Water Curl Refresher is a great daily moisturizer that replenishes moisture in dry hair. This product has Coconut Oil which has a soothing effect on the hair and scalp. It also helps with split ends, reduces frizz, scalp inflammation and has vitamin E to strengthen the hair. Monoi Oil also adds shine and help reduces frizz.
A new favorite is Robin’s Joy Naturals Leave-in Conditioner and Detangling Spray which is excellent for moisturizing natural hair after being outdoors in humid conditions like Texas. It’s super hydrating and leaves the hair shiny, soft and manageable for gentler comb through and helps to decrease breakage. This product also has Lemongrass which is an essential oil that works for dry and oily scalp conditions and is a good source of vitamin A.
